indeed tele-range shooting without IS is very shaky. i guess the remedy for you would be a good tripod or an upgrade to at least E-510 :) or, use panasonic/leica mega o.i.s lenses

well in that case you got to rely on tripod ler. hehe i was lucky when i choosed to buy my E-510 cuz i sudah tak tahan the absence of IS. but then few months later E-520, same sensor as E3.. sigh..

bump up your ISO to get a higher shutter speed
but I would to advice to not to exceed ISO-400

yes, pump ur ISO up, to get faster shutter speed. if that doesn't help, you got to upgrade lah HEHEHEHE

use tripod la..no need to upgrade yet...
I still remember someone told me that the first 10k shots are useless, the next 10k you'll learn to take better shots then after that you'll get your best shots
me also just passed 10k..:D

Set to shutter priority and follow the 1/focal length rule. Set ISO to AUTO with max of 400 or 800 if possible on the E-420. Even if underexposed, don't worry. A sharp but underexposed pic is better than a blurred well exposed pic.

Just to condense a bit for easier reference..
1) Shoot at minimum speeds of 1/focal length. eg, if lens use if 150mm, then speed is 1/300s as the minimum.
2) to achieve that, you may need to increase the ISO.
3) Use neat image if there is too much noise.
4) Slight under exposed is better than blur.
5) Something I learn from lkm..shoot in burst mode. 1 out of 5 may turn out sharp.
6) Bang it with a flash.

Get FL-50R flash.... put the flash on a tripod... set E-420 to high ISO like 800... with NF at standard...
setup the E-420 TTL flash... use at least 200mm lens.. F5.6 is OK...
find a bird... lock AE using spot meter on the bird... lock focus...
shoot the bird.. the bird won't fly because of the flash.. the bird thinks it's lightning...
redo your shots again, and again....
