After removing the surprisingly flimsy lens cap and lens hood (darn plastic!), i was glad to find no marks on the glass. Its 72mm diameter allows me to attach the UV filter from the 12-60

it doesn't feel as heavy as the 12-60. A bit too plasticky for my taste too considering its price range, plus its not weather sealed :(

its a tad faster than the 14-54. The zoom ring is very smooth

lens IS on, iso 800, f3.5, 50mm. Works so far in dim conditions.

a 'family photo' with bounce flash. missing - 14-42 & 14-50 (on my camera of course)

Overall, a good lens for Panasonic SLRs and the 420 if IS is needed. I need more tests with this lens outdoors but the overall outcome is that I like it so far.

C & C welcome :he:

since you have the luxury of owning all those lenses (in the similar focal range) maybe you could do a comparative review? :D

lol.. okay a quick one

build quality: 12-60 and 14-54 have excellent weather sealing and build quality. unfortunately the leica doesn't have any weather sealing; very very plasticky to my taste.

bang for ur buck (1st to last): 14-54, 14-54 mk 2, 12-60, 14-50

versatility: 12-60 comes first because its 2mm wider than the other 2 lenses. However for architectural shots, the lens shows distortion/ curvature at its widest, so i'd rather switch to the 7-14 for that purpose

image stabilisation: popphoto reported a 2 stop advantage in IS while the E-3 has 3-4 stops, so i'd rather use the E-3 IS

focussing speed: i haven't really compared the focus speeds between the 12-60 and the 14-50, but the leica definitely focusses faster than the 14-54

sharpness: all 3 are definitely quite sharp, but the 14-35 f2 is definitely king in this range.

any other inquiries?

Pleasant, accurate colours. Blue skies are the olympus trademark. Occasionally misses, but once the lens acquires its target, its tack sharp. Strangely, the colors from the 14-50 reminded me of the images i got from my friend's 14-35 i tried out a while ago. I dislike the fact that the lens cap & hood are quite flimsy, and easy to accidentally take it off. I'd rate the 14-50 on par with the 12-60. A joy to use. :)

Do you find with the Leica D indoor Auto WB is not consistent? Most of the time tend towards the warm side but occassionally one shot will be too cool.

Cheers mate.. do you have the same lens too?

I think it has to do with the camera body itself. Are you a panasonic user? For me, the E-3 is occasionally inaccurate with indoor white balance (fluro and incandescent), but shooting RAW leaves me solving the problem later in lightroom.

I am using the 14-50 on E510. With Zuiko lenses mounted the Auto WB is better. I seldom shoot in RAW coz of dun like to do the post processing!
