Just bought the EP1 yesterday and the first twenty four hours have been an emotional roller coaster ride. I love it yet I hate it.....

The first time I saw the EP1 ...it was love at first sight. The retro look, the shiny silver, the solid feel (nearly all metal except for the grip)....classy, real classy.

I read every review about it, looking more for the positive points and dismissing the bad...Even dreamt about owning one from even before the Malaysian launch! Called Olympus Kuching so many times enquiring about when Kota Kinabalu would get its stock that I am sure my number must have been black listed!

Anyway, yesterday the twin unit I ordered arrived! When I held the unit in my hands I was so very excited. Between yesterday and this evening I must have taken close to two hundred photos.

I got my unit at about 2 pm and by 10pm I realised that the unit was not up to what was expected. I went into a mild depression and started to regret the purchase. Most of the pictures I took last night was indoors or in less than perfect lighting. What I found :

1. Very slow AF especially with the 14-42mm kit lens. This makes taking photos of my 2 year old son almost impossible!!
2. Significant noise when ISO was bumped above ISO800.
3. IQ no where near the E3
4. I tried the camera with my FL36R and it felt absolutely wierd.Too top heavy!

Today, I brought the camera to work and the situation improved. I started to like the EP1 again.

1. Daytime pictures were good and sharp with much better IQ
2. The 17mm lens significantly faster. Excellent for landscape.
3. I really liked the ART filters and the in camera JPEG editing. Also like the multiple exposure mode and the movie mode.
4. It felt good being able to carry a small classy camera around. It has a solid feel and is really compact.Certainly attracted a lot of attention from my other photo kakis'
5. Don't miss having a viewfinder.

My two cents about the EP1...Well if you are contemplating a small camera, there are many other systems out there. For the RM3500++ for the kit you could get 2 LX3 or a Canon G10 with a speedlite 270EX plus wide and tele converters or even a Digilux 4 with a Leica leather casing. The other systems are easier to use and has built in flash which helps tremendously in situations when surrounding light is less than satisfactory. But looks wise, the EP1 is better than any of the 3.

For those starting on their first SLR or interchangable lens system, I think there are many other more friendly systems out there with better lenses and more variety of lenses. If you plan to start on a fourthird journey, the E620 or E520 might be a more suitable camera.

The EP1 is something you will either love or hate!. For the moment, for my purpose of a second travelling body (don't think it will replace my E3) I love it.

Anyway, the above is just my personal opinion. Please excuse the longwinded thread!:856:

Most cameras with live view AF will be slow. I tried the E-P1 and the AF is significantly faster than my LX-3. For shooting kids, SLR is still the fastest.
